Handwriting Skills

If you go to firststrokeshandwriting.com and click on Downloads you will find several great handwriting worksheets. There is also a Handwriting Rules poster that teaches children how to hold their pencil. I like their worksheets because they provide "pathways" for writing letters. It helps them develop their fine motor skills when they have to stay in the "pathway".

Web sites that aid in learning/practicing phonics

Dolch's 300 sight words

  • Ask him to think of a word that rhymes with a word that you give to him. Read poetry, or ask him to read poetry so that he can hear the rhyming words at the end of each line. Couplets would be great.
  • Learn basic sight words with automaticity. Dolch's or Fry's lists are great.

Resources for improving spatial coordination

Math:

  • Learn basic math facts by drilling with flash cards. Try www.funbrain.com for games on the computer to help. Also search "math facts games" for more websites that have games.

  • Learn the names and value of money. Ask him to count various amounts of money beginning with pennies and nickels.
